If your 2020 New Year’s resolutions include more “self care,” and if you’re truly serious about it, then ditch the aromatherapy candles and the scented bath salts. “Self care” — literally taking care of one’s self — refers to more than just relaxation rituals. Often, self care can be difficult, scary, boring, messy, or sweaty. But the outcome enriches your physical and mental well-being.

It is self care to see a therapist and talk about difficult issues that bring up feelings of sadness, anger, or fear. It’s self care to give up addictive vices like smoking, alcohol, or caffeine. It’s self care to clean the house on your day off when you’d rather just lie on the couch and binge watch your favorite TV show. It’s self care to brush your teeth after every meal. And it is self care to hire a personal trainer to help you get to the gym and grunt your way through a brutal workout.

I have made a career out of helping people of all fitness levels practice self care by starting, maintaining, or improving a physical fitness routine. If you’re ready to practice a new kind of self care for 2020, email lawandmotionfitness@gmail.com!
