Our modern work devices are a postural hazard. You jut your head forward to read your computer screen. You rotate your shoulders inward to type on your keyboard. Your bend your neck down to look at your smartphone, which you’re on constantly. Believe it or not, all this leads to changes in your posture even when you’re not using your devices. Most noticeably, you develop a forward head position and a distinct rounding in your upper back. As if avoiding looking like a hunchback isn’t reason enough to change these poor technology habits immediately, this poor posture has also been linked to headaches, neurological issues, depression and heart disease. In addition to traditional exercise programs, I specialize in corrective exercise, which I use to identify and help correct static and dynamic postural imbalances, which are often the root cause of chronic pain. A well-designed and implemented corrective exercise program can help “straighten out” hunched posture and mitigate the effects of the prolonged and anatomically stressful positions we find ourselves in over the course of the day.
